The good old days

On Tuesday I went, as I always do, to my friend Wendy's house and during the course of our conversation we started talking about how much we miss the mid-90s fashions and how much we loathe the stuff that is in style right now.  Neither of us has much patience for low rise jeans, I have zero tolerance for poufy blouses with the weird draggy sleeves and empire waists and we both agree that a lot of the fabric patterns that are currently popular remind us of rejected 1970s upholstery. Also, the uber pointy shoes? No no no no no no no no no.

We both miss the granny dresses paired with doc martens and jeans that came up to our waists.  I miss the fun hats (even though Wendy wore the hats and I, well, I was a walking fashion tragedy every day).  We miss the leggings under shorts, the short shorts paired with white t-shirts, vests and necklaces that went down to our belly buttons.  I especially miss when flannel was fashionable.

I have half a mind to try to bring it back…not that I'd be able to find the proper jeans, but if I could singlehandedly bring 1995 fashion back, even I would put on a (granny) dress.  Particularly because white socks and dock martens were appropriate footwear no matter what covered the rest of my body.

Thoughts?

I couldn’t agree more! and I say viva la 90′s! (although I do like me some pointy shoes…but I did back then too!!) The other day I wore my converse with a granny dress & jeans and my coworkers (all about 29-23) said that I looked “so cute and retro”
blaarg!!

Hey! Erin, come to Sydney; flannel is in a come-back phase as are round toes. Even though it is more work to find things to wear when the stores are in certain modes (I’m with you on pointy shoes), who cares? Be a fashion trend-setter and if you feel strange say, “This is what they’re all wearing in Samoa”. Wear what looks good on YOU!

Whoops…I think I just bought a dress with weird draggy sleeves…made out of 1970′s rejected upholstery. Oh well. I like it, dagnabbit.

Besides, is there a current style? Aren’t we sort of in an “anything goes” era? Or is that just because I’m outside of the cities and have no idea what modern culture is doing?

Rachel: The 90s are RETRO now? Oh my god, get me a walker!

Keebler: That’s always good advice :) I don’t know if round toed shoes ever truly went out of style (for a while there were these sneakers called “shell toe” that were very popular), but I know that it is very hard to find women’s shoes that aren’t sneakers that aren’t also some sort of heeled aparatus.

Kt: I’m still trying to get over the idea of you voluntarily buying a dress…my mind is boggling. :)

I check the shoe department for chunky Oxfords (think Jeanine Garafalo!) every fall, but they have not reappeared since 1997.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed–and my toes!

Let’s not forget the fabulous 80′s/90′s makeup trends too! I would really enjoy bringing back hot pink lipstick, blue eyeshadow, and neon blush. What could be better?

Hey, jelly shoes seem to have made a bit of a comeback recently…so that’s a start!

P.S. Thanks for stopping by to visit my blog! You’re always welcome. ;-)
